Facebook Acquires Messaging Application Whatsapp For $19Billion


In a shocking turn of events, Facebook has announced their acquisition of messaging application, Whatsapp. With over 450M active users, it seems that this might be a turning point for Facebook in the integration of both social and communications strategies.

In MEC's POV, this gives Facebook a larger global footprint and richer data collection means even though the likelihood of advertising being introduced on Whatsapp is still low. Nonetheless, with a projection to reach 1billion active users soon, Whatsapp is touted to become Facebook's first direct, non-advertising source of income.
