MediaCorp launches Malay and Tamil news portals

5 Jan 2015 marks the launch of two news portals from MediaCorp, MediaCorp Berita and MediaCorp Seithi, catering to their respective Malay and Tamil news and current affairs consumers. These portals will provide a wide range of information regarding news and developments within Singapore and the region, starting today.
Android and IOS apps will be available later in March this year for the portals. The portals will be updated in real time.
Content covered will range from  financial and business news to sports and entertainment.

The combination of the Malay and the Tamil News and Current Affairs departments will provide coverage of stories from the wide network of regional Channel NewsAsia andToday correspondents. The websites will also upload current affairs TV programmes that have been aired on Suria and Vasantham, with additional access to any of the MediaCorp Radio stations to catch up with breaking news as it is aired.
R. Nadarasan, supervising editor for Tamil News and Current Affairs, said: “With this launch into a new digital stage, we are giving today’s busy consumers more choices and flexibility to be informed and entertained at their preferred times, or when they are on the move.”

Google To White Label Optimised Sites Within Search Listings

Google is working to improve the overall mobile experience by labeling sites optimized for mobile device usage in their mobile search results.
This change will be rolling out globally over the next few weeks. Using Googlebot technology, sites will be scanned and measured across a number of factors. A page is eligible for the “mobile-friendly” label if it meets the following criteria as detected by Googlebot:
  • Avoids software that is not common on mobile devices, like Flash
  • Uses text that is readable without zooming
  • Sizes content to the screen so users don't have to scroll horizontally or zoom
  • Places links far enough apart so that the correct one can be easily tapped
Sites matching the criteria will be labeled “mobile friendly.” Importantly for advertisers, Google are evaluating using “mobile-friendliness” as a signal for search ranking results.

Implications:

There is nothing more frustrating than trying to access a site on your phone and to have swipe and zoom in order to read the content you have been searching for. This move by Google should provide mobile search users with a better overall experience, and it will be interesting to see what impact the “mobile-friendly” label will have on site visitations. Similarly, the potential influence on mobilefriendliness on search rankings would see many advertisers place a greater importance on their owned assets and consumer experiences.

Deutsche Telekom Creates First Video Clip Curated From Instagram Content

UK singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran is the star of the world’s first “InstaConcert” by Deutsche Telekom. The concert is part of a series of events called Telekom Street Gigs, which has national and international artists perform in unusual places, such as a corn maze, junkyard, or quarry. This month Ed Sheeran is climbing up to a stage 2,962 meters above sea level on Zugspitze, the highest mountain in Germany.
The world’s first InstaConcert lets fans contribute to the concert experience by sending out content from the event via Instagram, which will then be curated as an interactive music video. This concert is being realized by Deutsche Telekom in cooperation with the Warner Music artist, and the campaign idea is by DDB Dusseldorf with digital production by MediaMonks.
From the content generated by fans present at the gig, the interactive music video will convey a real concert experience in the digital world. As the sun goes down over the Alps and fans listen to some of Ed Sheeran’s famous tracks, including his latest ballad ‘Thinking Out Loud’, they will get to enjoy a unique moment live.
When playing the songs, users can determine the clip sequence and move around the concert to watch it from different views, such as the rear, the front row or the stage. This interactive video helps to bring the concert alive even after the event, for those who couldn’t be there in person or those who want to relive their experience. Philipp Friedel, Head of Market Communications Telekom Germany, said:
“Our live streams reach up to 140,000 spectators on all screens. And the spectators on site will film and share their best moments via social media channels. We want to take advantage of this potential and join the exclusive Street Gigs experience with the Telekom services of the best network. The strong character of the Instagram sharing music video creates a new brand experience.”

PwC's Mind The Gap

Singapore is well known to be a highly connected society with some of the world's highest smart phone and broadband penetration. It is therefore surprising that online advertising spend in Singapore is 15% of total advertising spend. This is far below the rates of online advertising in the most digitally advanced countries such as the UK and China where online advertising now represents 40% of the total advertising pie. In this Google-commissioned study, PwC has identified the four key inhibitors which are responsible for this and proposed some thought starters to help overcome each inhibitor.

T-Mobile Doubles The Number Of Music Streaming Services That Don’t Count Towards Data Caps

T-Mobile has today doubled the number of streaming music services supported with its recently launched “Music Freedom” program which allows the company’s customers to stream music from a variety of apps without counting towards their data caps.

Back in June, T-Mobile unveiled its Music Freedom plan. This allowed subscribers to stream music from certain sites without having it count against their data cap. Since the plan was introduced, the number of T-Mobile customers that stream music daily has tripled. 200TB of data are consumed without a charge each day, and 66 million songs are streamed for free daily. More importantly for T-Mobile, one out of every four of its customers said that Music Freedom was the reason they switched carriers. With that type of response to the promotion, it could be the music fans that put T-Mobile into third place and ahead of Sprint among the four major U.S. carriers
The new services include Google Play Music, Xbox Music, SoundCloud, RadioTunes, Live365, Mad Genius Radio, radioPup, radio.com, as well as smaller, specialty services focused on music genres like Fit Radio (for the gym), Fresca Radio (Latin, Hispanic and Caribbean music), Digitally Imported (electronic dance), JAZZRADIO, ROCKRADIO, and Saavn (Bollywood and Indian music).
For T-Mobile customers on a supported data plan – including Simple Choice, Pay in Advance, and some standard plans – Music Freedom allows them to stream music without worrying that they’ll go over their data limits while on T-Mobile’s network. The feature doesn’t kick in when roaming, however, or for streaming over a Mobile Hotspot or while tethered.
While seemingly a good deal for consumers, the launch of the feature did raise some net neutrality-related questions about T-Mobile’s ability to play “gatekeeper” to these streaming music services.* By only selecting a handful of the top players at launch, T-Mobile may have made it more difficult for smaller, niche services to compete while trying to reach T-Mobile’s 49.1 million customers.
For instance, Rdio was not initially available in the program, though it is now, and Beats is still not on T-Mobile’s list – even though iTunes Radio is, and both are Apple-owned. That means some services and their customers are left out of this deal, but that could change in time. T-Mobile says its program will continue to grow and it wants to support “every possible streaming service.”
Plus, rumour has it that Beats will be rolled into Apple’s general iTunes music offerings in the future, which could then allow it to be included. (In fact, its omission here as a standalone line item could be a hint that deal is in the works, given that all the other major music services are already listed and T-Mobile is now moving on to niche players.
T-Mobile says that following this summer’s launch of Music Freedom, the number of T-Mobile customers streaming music daily has jumped nearly 300%, and they’re now streaming 66 million songs – or roughly 200 terabytes of data – per day. 1 in 4 also cited Music Freedom as a key reason they switched carriers, the carrier also claims.
* Update: T-Mobile responded to this saying it’s not a “gatekeeper” here because services are selected by consumer voting and by services themselves asking for inclusion. However, ultimately, T-Mobile is in charge of flipping the proverbial switch and there aren’t regulations around this type of thing at this time. Just because T-Mobile is playing the good guy here today, allowing a carrier to include or exclude individual services from data caps is setting a dangerous precedent with regard to net neutrality. T-Mobile’s move may be a pro-consumer one meant to draw in new subscribers, but from a high level, it’s right to question if carriers should have this sort of power over their networks.

YouTube Launches Music Subscription Service

YouTube has announced its long awaited music streaming service called YouTube Music Key. Within the existing YouTube mobile application, the new music section has been given prominence and recommends music videos and playlists based on historical choices or what is currently trending. It's starting as an invite-only beta service: People who are invited are offered 6 months free, followed by a promotional lifetime price of $7.99 per month.

Music content gives YouTube a monetization strategy as users are now able subscribe for an ad-free experience, a subscription to Google Play Music, and the ability to play music offline. YouTube is jumping into a crowded space, going head-to-head withApple's iTunes and Beats music, Spotify, Amazon's Prime Music service, among others. The company has the advantage of its massive built-in audience for music videos in particular: It's a go-to destination for people looking for a song. The challenge: People are used to YouTube being free—will they want to play?

Implications: YouTube is regularly the place where music discovery can happen very naturally, and often where rare and unreleased music can be viewed and shared easily. Despite being late to the music streaming party, embedding within the existing app not only leverages existing data, but also means they already have an existing install base from which to start. Time will tell how well successful this will be, but following the Taylor Swift vs. Spotify issues, YouTube could succeed in providing a streaming service that works for all parties… particularly the consumer!

ST App Uses Unique Second Screen Feature In Latest Samsung Galaxy Note Edge

The Straits Times launched a special version of its breaking news app yesterday, which takes advantage of the new dual-screen feature of the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge smartphone.
The latest premium handset from Samsung is the first to have a narrow second screen on the right edge of the phone, which can display a different set of information from what is running on the main screen.
Users can have the latest ST headlines stream on the second "Edge" screen like a stock ticker tape while they are playing games, watching videos or messaging on the main screen. The headlines stream can continue to run even if the main screen is turned off or in standby mode.
When a user sees a headline that piques his interest, he can simply tap on it to automatically launch the full news story on the main screen.
ST editor Warren Fernandez said: "We are always looking for new ways to engage our readers and ensure they have timely news content regardless of how they choose to view it - from print to online to mobile.
"This new, customised ST app uses the unique second screen feature in the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge to help our readers keep abreast of the news even as they enjoy their favourite activities on their phones."
The ST app can be customised in many ways. When a user taps on a headline, it can be customised to link to the Web or the app version of the corresponding ST article.
Users can also select their favourite news categories to be shown on the ticker tape, such as Top Stories, Latest, Most Read, Singapore, Asia, World, Business, Sport, Tech and Lifestyle. The ST news headlines can also be set to refresh at intervals of 15, 30, 60 or 120 minutes.
The new Straits Times app will be preloaded on all Samsung Galaxy Note Edge phones sold in Singapore starting today. Consumers who bought the Edge earlier can download the app free from Samsung's Galaxy Apps store.
The app was developed in close consultation with Samsung to ensure a good user experience for ST readers.
Mr Eugene Goh, vice-president for IT and mobile at Samsung Electronics Singapore, said: "We are proud of our collaboration with The Straits Times on this Note Edge-optimised app, which elevates the consumer experience and ensures that consumers can keep up to date with what's happening in the world.

WIRED and MEC Trend: TV Has Never Been Hotter

Classic content-driven industries, such as television and film, are undergoing a period of change, as networks and studios evolve to innovate alongside new content formats (e.g. consumer created video), content delivery mechanisms (e.g. online streaming, OTT options) and content competition (e.g. Netflix, Amazon, YouTube). With more great content on more platforms and with more control than ever before, brands have the opportunity to provide content that offers depth and complexity in ways that attract consumers in new, engaging ways.

No matter the format or platform brands decide to leverage when developing and disseminating
content, it is critical to understand the power of genuine storytelling. The competition for consumer attention is more aggressive than ever; sharing stories that are fueled by honesty and emotion can be a brand’s greatest asset in cutting through the clutter, driving deeper consumer affinity and relatability.

WIRED’s look at how Pixar and Disney came together to create a renaissance for animated films is a testament to the magic that real, classic storytelling can ignite, creating a lasting impact on a viewer (and generations of viewers to come).

How To Win With Content

The YouTube content framework simplified!
Hero: Create content that is going to engage, and resonate with your audience. The content that you want to PUSH. A brand would typically only have a few hero moments in a year.
Hygiene: Always-on, based on what your audience is constantly searching for. Find out and own the conversation.
Hub: Where you house your hygiene and hero content. Need to be consistently and regularly updated.

Facebook Lauches Reach and Frequency Tool

The Reach and Frequency Tool is a way to bring reach and frequency planning and buying, similar to traditional broadcast, to Facebook. It allows marketers to build their brands on Facebook by focusing on the number of people they can reach and how many times that advertiser can message them.
How It Works
Facebook has worked to make this fairly easy to implement.  Impressions are booked and planned as in an IO but can now be done against reach levels and specific audience targets (except website custom audiences and fan exclusion targeting) at a fixed price.  It works across video and display and on mobile and desktop, and ads can run in either the right hand column or within the News Feed (but not both).
When to Use It
With specific parameters around campaign length and KPI not every advertiser or campaign will be a good fit for the R/F tool but we see advantages for advertisers under certain conditions:
When there’s a strong desire to plan against reach, frequency or budget goals.  By guaranteeing specific audiences at a fixed price R/F takes the guess work out of the auction marketplace and ensures that messages are delivered to relevant audiences at effective frequency levels.
Advertisers looking to own a specific SOV against a particular target.  R/F allows an advertiser to reserve up to 90% of an audience and they can do so with any number of creative messages, thereby ensuring that they can deliver the right message to the right audience at the right time.  However, as campaigns cannot be paused or adjusted once they’ve gone live options for optimizing campaigns in-flight are limited with R/F.  One exception is with creative delivery:  while specific sequencing isn’t yet an option the Facebook algorithm will optimize toward the most impactful or efficient message.
When the advertiser isn’t running another campaign on Facebook against the same audience target.  While it’s possible to run simultaneous campaigns with only one utilizing the R/F guarantees Facebook doesn’t recommend doing so as one campaign may end up cannibalizing the audience for the other thereby leading to under-delivery.
Limitations And Considerations
While MEC is enthusiastic about the possibilities Facebook R/F opens, advertisers should be cautioned against believing it is a one-size-fits-all solution to buying and planning on Facebook.  Key considerations include:
Campaign objective & audience: R/F is best suited to advertisers looking to drive upper-funnel metrics against larger audience targets.  It should not be considered for campaigns with DR objectives or smaller initiatives that have very specific targets that may not be able to satisfy an overall reach of 1 million users.
Competitive environment:  there are significant implications for key periods such as holiday, Black Friday, etc. when more advertisers will be in-market for similar audiences and competition may be higher than usual.  This could cause a shift in the way we buy social as it may require more planning, less real time decisions, and more competitive pricing.

Instagram Starts Offering Essential Ad Tools At Last

Source: Techcrunch
Facebook-owned Instagram is making itself more advertising-friendly today with the rollout of a suite of business tools aimed at brands which offer insights and analytics related to their use of the image-sharing network. Included in the suite are tools that show a business’s reach and impressions, as well as engagement, plus the performance of paid ad campaigns.
Specifically, businesses are being offered a dashboard interface for tracking their performance, where they’ll have tabs for things like “Account Insights” and “Ad Insights,” the latter which shows the analytics for things like impressions, reach and frequency as it related to ad campaigns and individual ads.
Another section, called “Ad Staging” is where advertisers and their creative teams can create their ads, preview them ahead of running, and work together on upcoming campaigns, explains a post on the Instagram blog, first spotted by The Next Web.
Notably, the campaign summary data is being offered to advertisers in real-time, allowing them to see how the audience is reacting to their sponsored photos, possibly so they could defuse the sort of situation Michael Kors faced when the company ran the first Instagram ad, and had to deal with massive user backlash. (That ad, however seemingly disliked, was actually fairly successful it was later pointed out. The account gained 34,000 followers in 18 hours after running.)
Instagram says it developed the new business tools in conjunction with select advertising partners, and is now making them available to all advertisers working to reach the network’s over 200 million users worldwide.
Ads on Instagram were inevitable, following the Facebook acquisition and the service’s need to begin generating revenue at last. However much some users won’t care for the further invasion of ads on Instagram, brands have already been participating for some time on the network, growing their follower accounts and establishing their communities. Offering these businesses tools to make better decisions about what users want to see and how well they’re engaged with the company and its shared photos only makes sense as the next logical step.
Instagram ad tools have been a long time coming, and highly anticipated by businesses. The company first introduced ads 10 months ago, and yet have waited until now to make campaign monitoring tools available. However, the actual public release of these tools is still being kept vague, for whatever reason – Instagram says that the suite will roll out “over the coming weeks and months,” without providing a more solidified timeframe.
We think this should arrive on our shores in less than a year's time!

MEC's Fast Take on Over-The-Top Video Programming

In this ‘Fast Take’ we cover video programming services delivered directly to the consumer via the internet – without a traditional bundled video subscription (like cable TV). We also explore how new content creators have amassed large audiences, built valuable programming brands and why traditional media companies such as Disney and Time Warner are flocking to the space.

Key Takeaways:
1) More Devices Mean Ubiquitous Access: When more consumers adopt broadband, smart phones, and tablets, access to content becomes universal. It’s not a question of if consumers will stream via OTT, it’s a question of how much they will stream.
2) Programming Is Programming: People choose content based on their interests; a show’s origin has become irrelevant. Did it start on TV or the web? It doesn’t seem to matter, as consumers are willing to subscribe (and sometimes pay) for programming they care about.
3) YouTube Is A Bellwether: The stable platform, global reach, and friendly ecosystem have made it the best place for creators to launch new programming ventures. Perhaps only a small piece of the OTT future, it offers a template for understanding the multi-million channel universe.
4) MCNs Will Gain More Significance: As investment flows to this sector, MCNs will be integrated into the operations of major media conglomerates. They will offer advertisers more custom content, sponsorship, and distribution opportunities. Their audience management tools will become increasing important.
5) Marketers Are Still Early: As the OTT landscape progresses, a few star channels will emerge. Brands could be marketing partners and/or channels themselves.

MEC's Fast Take on the 4Ps of Marketing

Thanks to an expanding ecosystem of devices and  technologies, marketing is evolving faster than ever. Almost everything is becoming connected to the Internet and brands face pressure to be accessible anytime, anywhere, across a fast-growing array of touchpoints.

So what are the new 4Ps?
Product, Price, Placement, and Promotion still matter but  the new 4Ps enable us to expand upon and magnify their effects in an increasingly digital world.

These new 4Ps are:
• Portability of the customer experience across myriad devices and interfaces.
• Personalization of the customer experience using volunteered and implied data.
• Proximity, adding additional context based on where someone is both literally (e.g., geo-location) and metaphorically (e.g., customer journey).
• Presence, integration of digital interactivity into traditional media and everyday objects.

On Facebook, World Cup is bigger than Olympics, Super Bowl combined

Through one week of the World Cup, Facebook has already seen more people having more interactions about the tournament on the social media site than it had for the Sochi Olympics, Super Bowl and Academy Awards combined.
A total of 141 million people have commented about, "liked" or shared posts on Facebook about the World Cup, the company said Friday. There have been 459 million different interactions on it.
"We always see a large level of conversation on Facebook around big sporting events," said Justin Osofsky, the company's vice president of global operations and media partnerships. "But what we're witnessing around the World Cup has been extraordinary."
By contrast, the Super Bowl engaged some 50 million people on Facebook, the Sochi games 45 million people and the Oscars 11.3 million people, the social media site said.
Facebook has targeted the World Cup as part of its effort to become a site with more real-time conversation and news distribution around big events, functions where many people think of Twitter first. Facebook is promoting World Cup-related hashtags, has a special World Cup-related section and heavily promotes celebrity-related posts.
A photo posted by Pitbull, who performed at the opening ceremonies, has received more than 1.2 million interactions, as has a photo posted by Brazilian soccer star Neymar, Facebook said.

The Return of A Share: Quantifying the Monetary Value of Social Sharing

We know that online reviews matter because people use them to make decisions. But how exactly does all of this chatter affect the bottom line for the business being praised or picked apart?
A new study by social analytics firm ShareThis quantified exactly how much more people were willing to pay for products—iPads, cars, various ingredients for recipes, etc.—based on reviews they encountered in-person and online.

For the first time ever, ShareThis has quantified the dollar impact of an online share. In particular, they looked at the consumer goods, tech and auto vertical.
