Case Study: All Eyes On The S4

Source: marketing-interactive; Samsung

We all love a clever ad. We love it even more when the clever ad is effective, engaging and entertaining. This is exactly how we would describe the latest ad by Samsung and telecommunications provider Swisscom called "All eyes on the S4".
To promote the Galaxy S4's eye-tracking feature, Samsung and Swisscom placed an out-of-home billboard at a train station in Zurich that challenged passersby to stare at it for a good 60 minutes.
The longer a participant stares at the screen, the bigger the discount on an S4.
The person who successfully stares at it for 60 minutes without looking away walks away with a phone.
The YouTube video has gone viral with more than 1.3 million views and counting.
We like this concept because it highlights the phone's feature successfully without showing it off in a standard manner. Instead, it was presented in a simple, fun and smart way.
The challenge also drew the attention of other passers-by, drawing a large crowd in the end to encourage the participant to 'keep staring'.
As a viewer of the video, you wish you were there to take on the challenge, not so much for the phone, but to beat the game.
Out-of home advertising is meant to convey a message and enforce a brand but good OOH advertising also engages and entertains. And that's what this campaign has done.
